About Dr. Alexander
Dr. David Alexander
With extensive experience in higher education and a strong commitment to God, the church and Wesleyan theology and practice, Dr. David Alexander brings a wealth of educational knowledge and spiritual leadership to his role as the 12th president of Northwest Nazarene University.
Dr. Alexander began his career in higher education at NNU as a member of the music faculty from 1986 to 1991. During these five years, he held leadership positions on faculty committees, directed the Northwesterners ensemble and produced as well as conducted musical productions. The Northwesterners and Dr. Alexander traveled across the educational district and overseas, representing NNU. The student body voted him Professor of the Year. Locally, he served on the board at Nampa First Church of the Nazarene. Dr. Alexander gained the majority of his faculty and administrative experience during 17 years at Southern Nazarene University (SNU) in Bethany, Oklahoma. He left the NNU faculty to serve as chair of the SNU School of Music. He was later appointed vice president of university advancement at SNU and in that position he directed alumni relations, church relations, development, admissions, communications and marketing.
Since assuming the presidency of NNU in July 2008, Alexander has led the University in articulating the NNU mission and values. With input from the Board of Trustees, Foundation Board and University community, he has guided the development of a long-range master plan NNU Vision 2025.
The Alexander family shares a proud tradition in Nazarene higher education. Dr. Alexander and his wife Sandy (Jilbert) graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University in 1977. Their son Matt and wife Brenda graduated from Point Loma and their daughter Amy and husband Andy Curry graduated from Southern Nazarene University. Dr. Alexander's parents, Rev. Dave and Lois Alexander, are NNU alumni. Dr. Alexander earned a doctorate in music education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a master of music in choral conducting from California State University, Fullerton. Dr. and Mrs. Alexander have been married for 36 years and have four granddaughters, Elizabeth, Addison, Noelle and Emma.
